  • BANDALOOP Health, Safety and Accessibility Guidelines 2023

BANDALOOP is a learning organization that acknowledges its own fallibility. As such, we approach the work of anti-oppression and building equity with curiosity and humility. BANDALOOP works to be a more equitable organization with the understanding that harmful historical bias and oppression pervades the performing arts, a reflection of the larger system of false hierarchies of human value.

With an understanding that access needs are diverse and every disability is different, BANDALOOP Studios strives to create a safe(r) space for the justice, dignity and joy of persons living with disabilities. We are committed to transparency around access at BANDALOOP Studios. Below are our present and evolving Accessibility Guidelines.

For questions, requests and further accommodations, please email studio@bandaloop.org.

During this jazz funk class, the focus is on feeling your full-out popstar fantasy baby! Jazz Funk is a commercial dance style that pulls influence from all styles of dance--some include, but are not limited to, hip-hop, jazz, and heels. Class begins with a follow-along warm up in the center of the space. The majority of the class will be spent learning choreography that is rooted in musicality and intricate movements that feel juicy and hot, hot, hot in the body. The end of class will be spent performing the choreography in small and large groups and we will close class with a cool down. This class is a safe and supportive space for you to commit to what feels good in your body and to be perceived in the ways you want to be seen!

Need to Knows

  • This class is structured like an intermediate level class, but the movement given is adaptable for all levels.

  • Sneakers are optional! non-marking soles only, please. You can be barefoot or wear socks if that feels best for you.

  • Bring knee pads if you're someone who usually wears them during floorwork.

contemporary improvisation forms

with Audrey Johnson

This class is an intermediate to advanced level improvisation based contemporary movement practice. My teaching draws from lineages of somatics, post-modern dance, contemporary spiral based and floorwork techniques, improvisation in performance, as well as yoga and herbalism. An opportunity to build our inner-outer kinesthetic awareness, class will begin from an introspective space and move towards an expansive movement and composition praxis. We will work with joint articulations, fascia, organs, bones, muscle, mind, voice, and the unknown.  Through a blend of individual and partner/group work we will explore physical movement concepts of ease and efficiency, mobility and stability, effort, release, leverage and counterpoint, spirals, diagonals, as well as energy and magic. An opportunity to meet ourselves where we are at, the format of class will be primarily improvisation, with some phrase-work here and there.

Need to Knows: All levels of movers are welcome but class will be taught at an intermediate+ entry point.

Inspired by but not limited to HIIT exercises, this class is for anyone curious about how to build strength for vertical dancing, as well as those who want to feel organized and capable in their bodies. Get ready to sweat, connect, and learn safe ways to strengthen and anchor yourself. Everyone is welcome!

BANDALOOP’s rigging for vertical dance and aerial work is done by qualified professionals. Our rigging team consists of certified mountain guides, professional rock climbers, theatrical riggers, and rope access technicians. This diverse set of vertically inclined professionals work closely with our logisticians and risk management team in keeping our dancers safe as they perform on buildings, bridges, and cliffs globally. BANDALOOP does not condone any student rigging or participating in aerial or vertical dance outside the classroom without the supervision of qualified professionals. You and others can be injured or killed. If you are interested in hiring a professional rigger, contact workshop@bandaloop.org.
